Pan de Muerto has traditionally been shaped like a baked round loaf with rolled strips of dough layered on top that bear a resemblance to the bones of the dead. A glaze of melted butter and orange zest is then brushed on top, followed by a generous sprinkling of sugar. It’s baked from flour, eggs, milk, butter and yeast. Flavoring with anise seed, cinnamon and orange zest is common.
